A garage door is one of the heaviest moving parts in your home. When it stops working properly, it can be frustrating and even dangerous. Before calling a professional repair technician, check these common issues and simple troubleshooting steps.
1. The Remote Control or Wall Switch Doesn’t Work
If your garage door isn’t responding to the remote or button:
- Check the Batteries: The most common issue is a dead remote battery. Replace the batteries and try again.
- Inspect the Lock Switch: Ensure the wall control panel isn’t accidentally locked (many wall switches have a small lock toggle).
- Check the Power Source: Make sure the opener unit plugged into the ceiling has power.
Verification: Press the button again—if the light on the wall panel or remote blinks, the signal is restored.
2. The Garage Door Won’t Close (or Reverses Immediately)
If the door starts closing and instantly goes back up:
- Clean the Safety Sensors: Located at the bottom left and right of the door track, these photo-eye sensors prevent the door from closing on objects.
- Remove Obstructions: Clear any dirt, leaves, or debris blocking the sensor beam.
- Check Sensor Alignment: Ensure both sensor LEDs are solid (not blinking). If blinking, realign them until they face each other directly.
Verification: Press the close button. If the sensors show solid lights and the door closes completely, the alignment is fixed.
3. The Door Opens or Closes with Loud Noise
If you hear squeaking, grinding, or rattling sounds:
- Lubricate Moving Parts: Apply a lithium-based or silicone garage door lubricant to the rollers, hinges, and springs. (Do not use WD-40, as it attracts dust and strips grease).
- Tighten Loose Hardware: Use a socket wrench to tighten any loose bolts on the brackets and tracks.
Verification: Run the door through one full cycle—it should move noticeably smoother and quieter.
4. The Motor Runs, But the Door Doesn’t Move
If you hear the opener motor humming or running without moving the door:
- Check the Emergency Release Rope: Someone may have pulled the red emergency disconnect cord.
- Reconnect the Trolley: Pull the emergency rope back toward the opener motor until it clicks back into the track trolley.
Verification: Operate the door via remote—the motor should now engage and pull the door along the track.
